What better way to spend one of the busiest days of the season (a Saturday in early October) than to DJ a wedding at Dobbin St, one of my favorite Brooklyn wedding venues. We had the ceremony on the roof and the reception in the main room downstairs. Read on for the story of this fun Dobbin St wedding.
Dobbin St Wedding in Brooklyn, NY
for Marisa and Justin
Dobbin St is an awesome venue located in trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It is famous for its roof top space where couples have their ceremony, and for its loft-like main space. There is a second floor with rooms for the wedding party to get ready and hang out. I included Dobbin St in my article
Marisa and Justin had their ceremony on the rooftop and it was really nice. I provided a wireless mic for the officiant and for the couple to do their vows. They also requested a mic stand which not all couples want, but I always have one in case it's needed at the last minute.
Justin and the wedding party walked in to "She's Got You High" by Mumm-Ra and Marisa walked in to Sigur Ros's "Hoppipola." Many of my couples have chosen Hoppipola to use in their ceremony recently. Everyone cheered as the couple walked out to "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure - a great choice.
After the ceremony, it was time to really start this Dobbin St wedding. The guests turned around and enjoyed cocktail hour on the other side of the roof. I have a great speaker I had brought up to the roof for the ceremony and cocktail hour.
Marisa and Justin had lived in three areas recently, LA, the Bay Area and NYC and they used that as a theme for the music for cocktail hour. I love it when my couples get creative like this. Here are some of the songs they chose:
Los Angeles I’m Yours –The Decemberists
To Live and Die in LA – 2Pac
I’m Always Drunk in San Francisco – Carmen McRae
I Left My Heart in San Francisco – Tony Bennet
No Sleep Til Brooklyn – Beastie Boys
NY State of Mind – Nas
After cocktail hour, everyone headed down to dinner. The couple kicked it off by doing their first dance to "Wildflowers" by Tom Petty. While eating, guests bobbed their heads to a mix of genres chosen by the couple such as 90's emo, indie and old school hip-hop. During the main course, three members of their wedding party did a speech using my wireless mic.
After dinner we kicked off the dance set with the parent dances. Marisa and her dad danced to Ben E. King's "Stand by Me" and Justin's mom and he danced to "Sweet Child of Mine" by Sheryl Crow. During the dance set I played a mix of top 40 throwbacks, old school hip-hop and 80's. I mixed it up and their guests were great. There was dancing from the start until the end. It was a blast!
Ben was amazing, he really took the time to understand what kind of music we like, and what we wanted the vibe of each part of the evening to be, and executed it perfectly. - Justin
Thank you Marisa and Justin for letting me be a part of your Dobbin St wedding!
Thank you to Heather Levine from Naturally Delicious, one of my favorite vendors to work with. And of course, thanks to Carla and the whole crew at Dobbin St!
